Sage Advice on the Current Political Crisis

Leader.Ego

This week, the NY Times published an articled called “New Book, ‘Clinton Cash,’ Questions Foreign Donations to Foundation.” It shares some distasteful facts culled from the soon-to-be-released book, “Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich.”

I’m quite certain both the article and the book were funded by someone with an anti-Hillary agenda. As author Amy Chozick writes, “The newly assembled Clinton campaign team is planning a full-court press to diminish the book as yet another conservative hit job.” But…I’m equally confident that the Clintons have used the people of America and the world to their own greedy, sleazy benefit.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d categorize the GOP as sleaze-balls investing others’ wealth, effort and intentions into their own egocentric agenda as well. The first article that popped up today when I Googled “anti-Republican articles” was titled, “Private jet costs keep up New Jersey GOP spending.” No surprise coming from Chris Christie. Though I doubt he differs from other cohorts across the spectrum of political orientation.

And just as the Clintons are both criminals and  “victims” of a Conservative hit job, so too, surely, is Christie a criminal and a “victim” of a Liberal hit job!

I’m so glad I have two lines of 2000-year old advice to focus and console me.

Be careful with the government, for they befriend a person only for their own needs. They appear to be friends when it is beneficial to them, but they do not stand by a person at the time of his distress.

Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi Judah HaNassi, Ethics of the Fathers, 2:3

Of course there are profound mystical and intrapsychic readings of the text. But the plain meaning serves perfectly wouldn’t you say? As election season takes off and propaganda gathers its smelly steam, we’d do well to remember Rabban Gamliel’s advice. Don’t trust the government. Rely instead on internal government and trust in Divine guidance.
